Sasol Gas business markets both natural and methane rich gas, which is transported via pipeline network to the end user.

Sasol Gas operates and maintains a gas supply network through 2 084 kilometres (km) of pipeline, including the 865-km cross-border pipeline linking the gas fields in Mozambique to the Sasol Gas network at Secunda in South Africa.

Sasol Gas delivers more than 120 million gigajoules (GJ) of pipeline gas a year to over 541 customers. Pipeline gas is a convenient, reliably supplied and environment-friendly energy source, that is cost effective and ideally suited to a wide rage of applications such as heat treatment, forging, melting and casting, paint drying, galvanizing, baking and steam generation. Customers are established in the industrial regions of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Free State.

In July 2006, the first plant in South Africa to employ the co-generation of electricity and steam with pipeline gas was commissioned in Richardsbay. The second plant situated in Newcastle will be operational in the first quarter of 2007.

Sasol Gas has come to an agreement that Spring Lights Gas will in future be responsible for all the marketing of pipeline gas to all new customers in KwaZulu-Natal.

Sasol Gas has embarked on the roll-out of a comprehensive Pipeline Integrity Management Plan, following International Best Practices. For this purpose Sasol Gas have partnered with Gasunie of The Netherlands to introduce the Pipeline Integrity Management System (PIMSlider) as well as introducing a program to conduct In-Line Inspections (Intelligent Pigging) and Direct Assessment of the pipeline network. This process will ensure amongst others:

  • That the integrity of the pipeline network is measurable and its remaining life predictable
  • That the pipeline is guaranteed "fit for purpose"
  • That the risk to the communities, property and the planet are minimised
  • That the reliability of service to our customers is ensured
